7 years defines my experience providing dual diagnosis mental health related counseling services to adolescents, adults and elders in a variety of inpatient/outpatient services in the criminal justice system in conjunction with integrated clinical health systems services. This experience gave me a new direction and way of life consisting of personal growth and change I would like to share with you. Our goal is to share my experiences with those who seek to enhance their level of personal growth and change. Serving adolescents, adults, elders, couples, families and groups with my training in in an eclectic variety of treatment modalities, the actual counseling approach with a given client is determined by your preference and personal goals. With the hope that your goals will center around the self discovery of personal strengths and yielding an increase in self esteem you will realize that your integrity is the most valuable asset about yourself. Upon this discovery you will be able to share with others as you become an extension of the counseling process. My theory is when people have hope and learn to challenge and replace irrational thoughts, beliefs and attitudes they create the biology of courage. By normalizing stress people are fee to experience change. In Relationship focused therapy the counselor will identify strengths by asking family members to take note of the family dynamics they want to maintain The counselor will look for exceptions to the problem by asking couples to recount times when the problem did not occur and to account for why, to formulate a solution and highlight strengths. Couples will review worksheets and experience discoveries by working together to identify strengths and cultural differences. In my experience within the past 7 years couples will experience cohesion within the family unit in which they will find new meaning and purpose. Couples will set goals that identifies a renewed value driven direction as they discover what they want to work towards and what is really important to them. At Franciccan University I was made aware and adapted my Christian basesd counseling approach to center around the Eleven Human Emotions that describe the pleasure, appetite or human emotions. The goal to acquire the good through Love Desire and Joy and to avoid the evil of Hate Aversion and Sadness. These emotions make up the heart or inner core of mans emotional life. For difficult issues it is wise to recognize the Utilitatian or assertive emotions of Hope Courage and Anger versus Despair and Fear. These Emotions give us the energy necessary to overcome obstacles that separate us from the things that are hard to get and what we really want. Clients are encouraged to engage in each component of the Eleven Human Emotions that will give them clarity and a renewed realtionship with the Holy Spirit thus gaining compassion for themselves and others. What do you have to lose and you have everything to gain by trying!

My grateful regards,
Tom has been so helpful for me as I’ve been coping with increased sadness and anxiety. As the weeks have gone by and different scenarios have popped up in my life, he has been a wonderful listener and has helped me to incorporate new tools and practices that have helped me grow in self-compassion and resiliency. My faith is very important to me and he has done a great job incorporating Catholic practices and beliefs into our sessions as well. He exceeded the expectations I had when I signed up for therapy initially and I am so thankful for the progress I’ve made!
Amazing and caring. Direct yet respectful!
Very helpful compassionate guidance. My weeks are getting better!

Tom is a fantastic counselor! Tom is extremely positive and has really helped me in coping with parenting issues and stresses of caring for my aging parent. The tools that Tom has shared with me have really helped me to be more centered, mindful, and compassionate.
William Shanahan is a wonderful therapist. He helped me become more motivated to take care of not just my mental health, but my physical health too. I recommend him highly to anyone needing a good therapist.
He is amazing. Absolutely wonderful. He helps me understand my very cluttering thoughts
I’ve really enjoyed working with Tom over the past 6+ months. He really understands me; I feel heard in every session. I like his advice, it resonates with me and I find it valuable.
I feel like I can share anything with him and I don’t feel judged, only support or guidance if needed.
William was patronizing and rude during our session continually downplaying my trauma. He sounded annoyed as I attempted to talk about the issues I wanted to speak about. All I really got was mind-numbingly simplistic gestures and new aged just don't feel that way bullshit. I have canceled my subscription and will be taking my counseling seriously to people who aren't just reading from a psyche 101 technical manual and offer legit human connection and support.
I've had two sessions with him thus far. He asks me what I want to talk about, instead of trying to direct where the session goes. Additionally, he's personable and gives me things to do and think about for the next session.
I have enjoyed talking with William thus far. He is always present in our conversations and makes me feel heard.
William is an absolutely amazing councilor, super positive and upbeat. he has personally given me a ton of resources, and i’m super thankful to finally find a councilor who i feel fully comfortable to share parts of my life with. definitely my #1 favorite councilor by far! would highly recommend to a friend!
I recommend William for sure. I was struggling for a while before I sought help, and he was able to talk out my issues and seek resolutions. My life has taken a positive turn in a matter of weeks.
William is super cool. He makes me feel heard and like he always has my back.
Tom does a great job for me, and i would recommend him
Pleasure to talk to. I always look forward to our next chat.
I have just begun, but am very excited to continue working together and talking. So far I really like this.
